UNC MSA About the Muslim Students AssociationThe UNC Muslim Students Association (MSA) is a religious, social and outreach student organization that aims to network the Muslim students on campus and to serve as their voice in the student community. MSA also reaches out to the larger student body in interfaith cooperation and works with other organizations to bring about positive change on the UNC campus.Outside of an active organizational agenda that includes Ramadan iftars (dinners), prayer room services and weekly educational meetings, the MSA hosts annual events such as Sportsfest (January), the Muslim-Jewish Artsfest (Spring) and Fast-a-thon (September). Sportsfest Tournament

Insha'Allah, the 11th annual UNC MSA Sportsfest will be held on January 14th and 15th, 2012 (MLK Weekend) in Chapel Hill, NC. This is a fundraising tournament that is hosted on behalf of the UNC Muslim Students Association for Muslims across the US. A portion of the proceeds will go towards supporting the UNC MSA, and the remainder will be donated to an organization that helps fund the education of underprivileged Muslim women in Zanzibar. Last year, through our donation, we were able to help fund the ENTIRE secondary education of one woman!

There will be a 7v7 flag football tournament on Saturday, January 14, and a 5v5 basketball tournament on Sunday, January 15. Costs for one sport is $250, and two sports is $300. We plan to have official referees for both sports.

There will also be a ladies 5v5 basketball tournament on Sunday, January 15. Costs for sisters basketball is $150. If you are interested, please sign up on the website.

The deadline to register is by midnight on JANUARY 8th, 2012. Spots will be filled quickly, so register as early as possible!

Page 2 Please have your team roster, jersey numbers, and contact information before beginning the registration process.One person may register for the entire team. However, every player on the team agrees to the waiver on the registration form. Payment for the team must be made online no more than 24 hours after the registration. Without paying, your registration is incomplete. When using the online payment system, please remember to use the same email address on the payment screen as you used on the registration form.After receipt of payment, you will receive a registration confirmation. Please remember to bring I.D's to the tournament.No refunds will be given. Make sure to read through all the rules, procedures, and formats before registering.Payments can be made via PayPal or by checks made out to the "UNC MSA." If writing a check, please remember to put Sportsfest in the memo. Mail all checks to Matthew Stevens at 8308 Niayah Way, Raleigh NC 27612.

By registering your team, you agree to the following:"I, as the coach or captain registering this team, hereby acknowledge that my team and I (hence referred to as "we") have read all rules and regulations of the MSA Sportsfest to be held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We agree to abide by these rules throughout our participation in MSA Sportsfest 2012. All participating members of my team, including any coaches and spectators, understand that the UNC-Chapel Hill Muslim Students Association and its members, volunteers, and officials cannot be held liable for any personal injury sustained during the tournament. We also waive the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, its facilities, its officials, and its personnel of liability for any personal damages we may incur during the tournament. Further, we agree to compensate UNC-Chapel Hill and/or the MSA for any damages to property we cause during our involvement in the MSA Sportsfest 2012. "

Exit left at US-15/501 in Durham and follow 15/501 approximately 9 miles to Chapel Hill. Once in Chapel Hill, maintain 15/501 Bypass (Fordham Blvd.). Around the 7th stoplight, turn right on Manning Drive. Continue on Manning until first stoplight. Turn right at light onto Ridge Road. Continue on Ridge Road until first road on left. Turn left onto Stadium Drive and continue until Stadium ends on South Road. Turn right on South Road. Go through traffic light; Fetzer Field is on left behind Carmichael Auditorium.From Points West:Take I-85 North towards Durham, N.C. Exit just past Burlington onto NC-54 East (exit #148, Chapel Hill). Follow NC-54 for approximately 20 miles to Carrboro. Go through two stoplights and stay on NC-54 until the next stoplight. Tournament Procedures

1. Brothers will play football (Saturday) and basketball (Sunday). Sisters will play basketball (Sunday) in a separate section of the gym.2. Basketball/FootballDepending on the number of teams, either each team will play 2 preliminary games and then be seeded for playoffs based on prelim games, or teams will be split into divisions and play a round robin format within their division. The winner of each division advances to a single elimination playoff. EACH TEAM IS GUARANTEED AT LEAST 3 GAMES.3. Tie BreakersIn case of ties in divisions, the following will be used to break all ties in this order: - Previous Head-to-Head competition - Fewest Points/Goals Allowed - Most Points/Goals Scored - Sportsmanship Rating - Coin-toss4. In case of inclement weather, games will be shortened. The only weather that will cancel games will be lightning.5. Game time is forfeit time! No exceptions to this rule.6. I.D. will be checked at the beginning of the tournament and before each game.7. Sportsfest reserves the right to mend tournament procedures where necessary.

Islamic Studies 101: Spring 2012

We know that throughout the course of your college career you may not have had the opportunity to compliment your course schedules with religious islamic studies coursework. We are happy to announce that this upcoming Spring semester the UNC MSA will be hosting an Islamic Studies 101 course. Here are the details of the course:The course will be held at UNC one night per week for 1-2 hours per weekThe weeknight will either be Tuesday or ThursdayThe exact timing of the course will be announced laterThe course reading will be, "In Pursuit of Justice: The Jurisprudence of Human Rights in Islam"The course will be lead by community members, Sister Samar Shawa and her husband, Brother Iyad Hindi

About Islam

Islam literally means submission. It is derived from the root word salam, meaning peace. Indeed the main basis of Islam is the total submission of man to the Will of Allah, The Creator and The Sustainer of this world and all that exists.Allah is the Arabic word for God, which indicates His Oneness and His Uniqueness. He is the same God that created Adam (Peace Be Upon Him), the God whom Prophets such as Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus (Peace Be Upon Them) called their people to worship. Islam is the completion of the Message brought forth by all these Prophets (PBUT). It was revealed to Muhammad (PBUH) via the Angel Gabriel.Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is the last and final Messenger of Allah sent to this world. He brought forth the Message that dictates every aspect of human life. It is this Message that 1.6 billion Muslims around the globe believe in. This Message consists of the Qur'aan, the Spoken Word of Allah, and the Sunnah (actions) and Hadith (sayings) of the Prophet.The Five Pillars of IslamShahada [Declaration of Faith]: The declaration that "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad (PBUH) is His slave and final Messenger."Salat [Prayer]: Muslims perform obligatory prayers five times a day.Saum [Fasting]: Fasting during the month of Ramadan - Muslims fast during the daylight hours of the holy month of Ramadan. This refrainment is not only from food but also all kinds of sins like lying, cheating, swearing etc. The first verses of the Qur'aan were revealed during this month.Zakat [Charity]: Muslims must give a small percentage of their savings to the needy in the Muslim community on an annual basis.Hajj [Pilgrimage]: Muslims must make pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca (in Saudi Arabia) once in their lifetime, if they can afford it and their health permits it.The Six Pillars of FaithAllah: Allah is One, The Omniscient, and The Eternal. Allah cannot be associated with any partners. He neither begets nor was He begotten. He is Unique and none of His creations resemble Him. In the Quran, Allah says (what can be translated as): Say (O Muhammad (PBUH)): "He is Allah, (the) One. Allah, The Self-Sufficient. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none equal or comparable to Him." (Chapter 112)The Angels: The Angels are beings of light, having no physical body which can be discerned by the human senses. They are unlike man in that they don't eat, drink, sleep, or procreate; they are pure, devoid of animal desires, sins, and misdeeds; nor do they have any of the tangible physical attributes of man.The Prophets: After the creation of Adam and Eve, God sent many Prophets to the people to teach them about God and to instruct them to worship the Only True God (Allah). The Prophets brought with them guidance to worship Allah, glad tidings of Paradise and the warning of punishment in Hell. There have been 25 Prophets mentioned in the Quran. These include Noah, Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Them). All of these Prophets (PBUT), brought with them the same message. The message of One God, The Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. Jesus (PBUH) was also a Prophet of Allah like Abraham, Moses, and Muhammad (PBUT). He was granted many miracles by Allah, such as the raising of the dead, the curing of the lepers, the talking in his cradle and being born to a virgin mother. However, he was not God, or the Son of God.The Books: All muslims believe that Allah sent down scriptures to his messengers and that these books were the word of God. These scriptures include the Torrah, the injeel (bible), and the Quran. Both the Torrah and the Injeel were given to a specific nation at a specific time. The Quran, being the final message of God, is sent to all of humanity until the day of judgement. Just as the word of the Injeel over-ruled the Torrah, the word of the Quran over-rules the Injeel and the Torrah. Being the final message of God, Allah promised to preserve the Quran untill the last day. So far this has been true with thousands of scholars alive today who have memorized the entire Quran word for word and relate the chain of instructors all the way untill the prophet Muhammed (PBUH).The Day of Judgement: The Day of Judgement is the promised last day when all of mankind will be resurrected from the dead and brought towards Allah to be punished for their sins and rewarded for noble deeds. On this day, those who believed in God and lead a pious life will be granted, by the mercy of Allah, the greatest of rewards, paradise.Fate: All muslims believe that Allah, The All Knowning and All Seeing, is aware of everything that has ever happened and is aware of everything that will happen. Nothing happens without the knowledge and will of Allah. When God created the universe, he also created a pen and a book and wrote down every event that will ever happen.
