1. Weekly Meeting > Wednesday, January 20th at 6:00 p.m. > Student Union Room 2518 A-B : Please bring donations for Haiti!
During this week's meeting, Professor Krysta Black will be presenting on early Islamic art, specifically the characteristics of development of Mosques, and the varied approaches to Mosques in different parts of the Muslim world. After her presentation, we will have our yearly Masjid building competition. Additionally, we will be collecting funds for Haiti; we have a donor who is willing to match up to $500 to what we raise at our meeting, so please come prepared!
2. Freshmen Dinner > Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. > Spanky's Restaurant on Franklin St.
In order for the current freshmen to attempt to reach the awesomeness of the Class of 2011, inshAllah, there will be a freshmen dinner on Tuesday the 19th at Spanky's Restaurant. Eat well, but be mindful of the Freshmen 15, you will only make the upperclassmen look better.
3. Freshmen Event: Spring From the Fall: Recovering From the G.P.A. You Wish You Never Had > Thursday, January 21st at 6:00 p.m. > Location TBA
Intelligent and unintelligent freshmen alike (and any others interested) are invited to "Spring From the Fall: Recovering From the G.P.A. You Wish You Never Had", a session on how to revive your G.P.A. from your first semester at Carolina (unless you really are perfect, mashAllah!). The session will be on Thursday, January 21st at 6:00 p.m. and the location will be announced at the meeting.
4. NCSU MSA > Meeting: Special Guest speaker from IONA on "Repentance, Revitalization of Faith, Renewal of Covenant"
NC State has graciously invited UNC-MSA to their general body meeting with guest speaker Br. Mustapha Elturk, Ameer of IONA, who will be elaborating on the 3Rs - Repentance, Revitalization of Faith, and Renewal of Covenant from the Qur’anic perspective- and how they can be the bases of Iqamatuddin (the establishment of faith). The event is on Thursday, January 21st at 6p.m., in Riddick Hall Rm 451 at N.C. State.
5. Duke MSA > Spoken Word Night
There will be a Spoken Word Night on Thursday, January 21st from 7-9 p.m. at the Coffeehouse on Duke University's East Campus. The event is an MSA Southeast event hosted by the Duke MSA; if you'd like to perform or learn more about the event, take a look at dukemsa.org.
6. Book Drive & Volunteering for Orange Correctional
A muslim brother, Solomon Brunette is running a project titled Prison Book drive to facilitate access to academic texts to inmates at Orange Correctional who wish to seek education while they are incarcerated or upon release. Additionally, the UNC MSA is organizing a volunteer project for Muslim inmates at Orange Correctional Center. As of yet, the times and dates are to be decided. If you are interested in donating books, or in the volunteer project, please email Nawsheen at knawsheen@gmail.com. You have to be 21 years or older to volunteer Special training will be provided for interested volunteers.
7. Movie Premiere: "Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think" > Saturday, January 30th > Fedex Global Education Center's Nelson Mandela Auditorium
We are proud to announce that InshAllah, on January 30, there will be a premiere screening of the UPF film "Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Think". The film explores the expertly gathered opinions of Muslims around the globe as revealed in the world’s first major opinion poll, conducted by Gallup, the preeminent polling organization. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Ms. Dalia Mogahed, Senior Analyst and Executive Director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies. We hope to see you there, inshAllah!
